Free CAD converter
Convert CAD files without uploading them.
One converter for drawings and 3D models. Drop a DWG, DXF, STEP, STL, OBJ, PLY, IFC or SolidWorks file, pick an output, and download it. Everything happens in your browser, so even confidential drawings never leave your computer.
What can it convert?
2D drawings
From: DWG (Release 14 – AutoCAD 2018 format; 2007-format files partially), DXF
To: DXF R12 · vector PDF · layered SVG · PNG
3D models
From: STEP/STP, STL, OBJ, PLY, IFC, SolidWorks SLDPRT/SLDASM
To: binary STL · OBJ · binary PLY · GLB (glTF)
What converts, and what doesn't
- Geometry converts as it is drawn: arcs, circles and splines become runs of short straight segments, and blocks and dimensions are exploded into plain lines.
- Text becomes simple single-stroke lettering, so it reads correctly but is no longer editable text. Non-Latin characters may appear as character codes.
- Solid fills are kept. Hatch patterns may be missing.
- Only model space is converted. Paper-space layouts and viewports are not included.
- Every output is a triangle mesh. STEP and IFC solids are tessellated for display, so the result is not an editable solid or B-rep.
- When the source names its parts (STEP and IFC assemblies, for example), they become named groups in OBJ. STL, PLY and GLB hold a single combined mesh.
- Colours and materials are not carried over.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The Caddis engine is compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside your browser tab, so your file is read and converted on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.
Which conversions are supported?
2D drawings (DWG, DXF) convert to DXF R12, vector PDF, layered SVG and PNG. 3D models (STEP/STP, STL, OBJ, PLY, IFC, SolidWorks SLDPRT/SLDASM) convert to binary STL, OBJ, binary PLY and GLB. Point clouds convert to PLY or XYZ.
Can it convert a 3D model to DWG or DXF, or a drawing to STEP?
No. Turning a mesh into a drawing (or a drawing into a solid) needs projection or modelling, not just a format change. The converter only offers outputs that keep the geometry faithfully.
Is there a file-size limit?
There's no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. Very large drawings are capped by the engine's geometry budget; if a file exceeds it, the converter says so before you download.
Which browsers work?
Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 18.2 or newer, on desktop or mobile. The engine needs WebAssembly garbage collection, which older browsers lack.
Need to measure or mark up the drawing too?
The same engine powers the free Caddis viewer on the web and on iPhone. Open DWG, DXF, STEP and STL files, measure, and add markup, all on your device.
